The story of Sunrise started with a phrase, “Don’t Dream it…Do it” in 1990. Whilst travelling around the Indonesian archipelago in January 1992 a young Scottish lad set foot upon Gili Air. The island’s magic was over-whelming and after two weeks of indulging in its raw and powerful nature, he knew he would return…3 months later, at the age of 22, previous local friendships became business partnerships. The coconut field that would become the Sunrise resort was acquired. A temporary restaurant was erected in the centre of the property and a beach-wall was built to stem land erosion. ..what followed was an eclectic development driven by the progressive acquisition of local licences. A small bungalow was handcrafted by a local builder. Staff quarters were added, with a more permanent restaurant to follow. A “Pondok Licence” for five bungalows was granted. Looking to Lombok for inspiration the Local Rice barn (Lumbung) tradition was converted and transformed into a tourist initiative. The first room was completed in 1995, and still stands today having been re-thatched and renovated when required. Over the next 4 years four more rooms, in the same relaxed “Lumbung” style were added. "Were the first, in the Gili
s to use the original and traditional Lombok, Lumbung style." During this time local tourism increased driven by the allure of Gili. Trawangan’s party reputation and the expanding dive centres. Telephone lines were made available to local businesses and Sunrise received its first mention in a Lonely Planet. Differing levels were hand dug and thousands of small plants were brought over from Lombok. Unfortunately, many could not survive the long, hot dry season and salty groundwater. Even so, we are proud of the survivors who have given rise to our sumptuous garden full of Coconut Palms, Bougainvillea, Hibiscus, Pandan, Jasmine & Frangipani to name a few. In 2003 the temporary restaurant was demolished to make way for more garden. A new kitchen and reception area were created in front. Now with the arrival of Lombok’s International Airport we have been requested to cater for patrons in need of air-conditioning and more upmarket accommodation and services. This leads us to the current phase of development. Our old restaurant has been replaced by a stunning three bed villa. The restaurant has moved to the beach front and our new Lumbungs are marble floored with air con and romantic four poster beds. A pool is planned for 2013 along with additional Deluxe and Suite accommodation. "We hope you enjoy sharing our dream." Over the years we have made significant contributions to the local economy through employment, training and encouragement of local initiatives. We are very proud of our team some of whom have been with us caring for our customers needs, for over 15 years.
